Editor:- April 11, 2008 - this week Emulex and Intel launched 10Gb/s Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) adapters.

Emulex says that with FCoE, customers may now leverage the ubiquity of Ethernet to converge both storage and networking traffic, improve overall efficiency and simplify the infrastructure.

Intel's PCIe dual port FCoE adapter will be in volume production in May and will be priced at $799. The entire Intel 10GbE family will have FCoE support on Red Hat Enterprise Linux by July and on Windows later this year.

FCoE is a new standard with support from leading storage and switch oems. The first mention on these news pages was in October 2007 - when QLogic unveiled its products.

In theory FCoE may help customers with an installed base of legacy FC applications reduce costs by moving them onto Ethernet environments. In practise, as we saw with the long drawn out birth pangs of the iSCSI market - tidying up all the loose ends could take many years.

San Jose, California - April 10, 2008 - IBM researchers have published details about a new type of high density non volatile memory. "Racetrack" memory is so named because the data "races" around the wire "tracks". IBM suggests that in the next 10 years - the new memory could compete with flash at a much lower price per gigabyte. The new technology uses magnetic domain storage but without the high current needed by earlier solid state magnetic devices.

Hillsboro, OR - April 10, 2008 - LaCie announced today that it has been awarded 4 Red Dot Awards for superior design across multiple product families. Winning products include the Neil Poulton designed 2big family of SMB NAS, the Sam Hecht designed Little Disk family and the Ora-Ïto designed Golden Disk. These LaCie products were selected by an international jury of design experts from among more than 7,000 entrants from 60 countries. SNW, ORLANDO, FL - April 8, 2008 - Spectra Logic announced details of its soon to be released new Media Lifecycle Management software for its tape library customers. MLM will reduce backup failures by tracking more than 30 pieces of information about individual LTO tapes and logging this on on the tape's built in flash chip. Information such as: born-on date, number of reads and writes, error rate, media quality, date of last access, application usage, encryption information, cleaning log and remaining capacity are tracked. MLM and BlueScale are compatible with all major backup applications. ...Spectra Logic profile

Editor's comments:-
already past the decline and now in the fall years of the tape library market it looks like customers will get all kinds of useful information and services which they probably would have liked to have before. This sounds similar in concept to the SMART logs in hard disks and SiSMART in SiliconSystems' flash SSDs.
