VMware Backup
Made Easy with Idealstor Removable Disk Backup
GAITHERSBURG, MD -
August 21, 2008 - Idealstor today announced interoperability between
its removable disk backup appliances and VMware Consolidated Backup.
VCB solves one of the biggest hurdles that backup administrators face when
implementing a VMware virtual environment by providing a built in utility that
quickly backs up virtual servers without using up valuable system resources or
having to purchase expensive backup agents to backup each VM. Because the
Idealstor Backup Appliance comes pre-configured with Windows 2003 Server it is
an economical solution for running VCB. VCB can be installed directly on the
Idealstor Backup Appliance and the backup jobs can be sent straight to the
Idealstor removable SATA drives. The benefit to a backup administrator is that
this one device takes the place of a dedicated 2003 VCB proxy server and
tape library and
drastically reduces the cost of implementing a VMware backup strategy.

STMicroelectronics Demonstrates 6Gb/s SATA Interface at IDF
Geneva
- August 19, 2008 - STMicroelectronics today demonstrated the world's
first MIPHY (Multi Interface PHY) Physical Layer interface for the new 6Gb/s
SATA Technology.
Physical Layer macro-cells perform the
high-speed serialization and de-serialization of data to and from the disk and
provide a 20-bit-wide parallel interface to the link layer.
SATA is the most
popular interface for hard
disk drives and the ST demonstration coincided with the official
announcement by the SATA
International Org of the new specification, which doubles the maximum data
transfer speed from 3Gb/s to 6Gb/s, during the
Intel Developer Forum this week in San
Francisco.
ST's 6Gb/s SATA PHY is an IP (Intellectual Property)
block designed to be integrated with other functions into low power
System-on-Chip (SoC) devices supporting 1.5 and 3 Gb/s as well as 6 Gb/s SATA
HDDs for mobile and desktop computing applications. The ST demonstration
features the SATA Physical Layer Serial Interface, fabricated in 65nm CMOS
technology, that will power new HDDs from a leading manufacturer later this
year.

SSDs in the Enterprise - New Market Report
Los
Gatos, CA - August 18, 2008 - Objective Analysis has published a new
report (price $5,000) called - "Solid State Drives in the Enterprise".
The
60-page report not only explains why and how
flash SSDs are
gaining traction in the enterprise server market, but is backed up with
detailed unit shipment forecasts for SSDs into each of the major enterprise
markets.
This study exhaustively examines several enterprise server
applications and explains the appeal of SSDs in each. The report contains a
compilation of opinions on enterprise SSDs that Objective Analysis has learned
from interviews with numerous server manufacturers and users. Some findings
from the report:-
- The market for enterprise SSDs will grow by 2 orders of magnitude to over
1.7 million units in 2013.
- Enterprise SSD revenues will grow at a 65% average annual rate to
exceed $1 billion by 2013.
- A significant portion of this growth will be driven by a steep price
decline in the SSD market driven by NAND price declines. The enterprise HDD
market will shrink faster than the enterprise SSD market will grow as SSDs
replace HDDs at a 10:1 ratio.
Readers will gain a solid understanding
of enterprise SSD technology and the existing alternatives, and will learn why
many applications can benefit from a switch from
hard disk drives to
SSDs. 9 tables deliver key
metrics and detailed forecasts through 2013; 18 figures help to explain how the
technology works, and to outline the workings of the market.
