External Disk Market Grew 17% - says IDC
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.
- September 5, 2008 - Worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues
posted 17% year-over-year growth totaling $5 billion in the second
quarter of 2008 according to IDC.
For the quarter, the
total disk storage systems market grew to $6.9 billion in revenues, up 10.9%
from the prior year's 2nd quarter. Total disk storage systems capacity shipped
reach 1,777 petabytes, growing 44% year over year.
"Despite
concerns about a 2008 slowdown in IT spending, external disk storage systems
spending experienced strong growth in the first half of 2008," said Natalya
Yezhkova, research manager, Storage Systems at IDC. "The 2nd quarter of the
year was remarkable, not only because it is the highest growth in 2 years, but
also because of the distribution of this growth across different market
segments. The ability of vendors to meet a variety of needs among customers with
a diversity of storage products and initiatives led to solid growth across all
installation environments, even in those that declined over the past several
quarters."
EMC maintained its lead in the external disk storage
systems market with 21.7% revenue share in the second quarter, followed by IBM
and HP in a statistical tie with 13.1% and 12.9% revenue share, respectively.
Dell ended the quarter in the 4th position with 9.2% share. NetApp and Hitachi
finished the quarter in a statistical tie for 5th with 8.0% and 7.6% revenue
share respectively. Among the top 5 suppliers, EMC and NetApp posted the
strongest year-over-year revenue growth during 2Q08, with 19.7% and 17.2%
growth, respectively.
The total network disk storage market (NAS Combined with Open SAN)
posted 22.0% year-over-year growth in the second quarter to more than $3.8
billion in revenues. EMC continues to maintain its leadership in the total
network storage market with 26.4% revenue share, followed by HP with 12.9%
revenue share. In the Open SAN market, which grew 15.5% year over year, EMC
lead with 23.9% revenue share, followed by HP with 16.7%. The
NAS market grew 23.5% year
over year, led by EMC with 39.8% revenue share and followed by NetApp with 28.5%
share. The iSCSI SAN
market continues to show strong momentum, posting 93.9% revenue growth compared
to the prior year's quarter. Dell, through its acquisition of EqualLogic, led
the market with 32.8% revenue share, followed by NetApp and EMC in a statistical
tie, with 14.6% and 14.1% share, respectively.

Adaptec's New Spin on Idle Wastrel RAID Power
MILPITAS,
Calif. - September 3, 2008 - to significantly increase the energy efficiency
of disk-based storage, Adaptec Inc. today kicked off its green power
initiative.
Adaptec Intelligent Power Management is a new
capability that allows users to easily custom-configure storage systems to
reduce power consumption by up to 70% without sacrificing performance.
It's integrated into all of Adaptec's Series 2
and 5 RAID controllers and is compatible with 122 disk drives across 5
leading vendors. It's ideal for applications with large blocks of idle time,
such as disk-to-disk backup,
e-mail archiving and file and print servers. It allows drives to be operated in
3 power states:
1) - Normal operation - full power, full RPM
2)
- Standby - low-power mode that spins disks at lower RPM during idle periods;
and
3) - Power-off - disks not spinning.
In addition,
blackout periods can be set in which power management features are disabled,
such as during peak IT activity periods.
IT managers can configure banks of disk drives to operate in
different power states at varying times, and automate the drives to spin up and
down according to drive usage patterns. When drives are accessed during
pre-configured spin-down to Standby or Power-off modes, Intelligent Power
Management quickly and automatically powers these drives back up, as needed, so
performance is not impacted. Also, the Adaptec RAID controller automatically
monitors drives that have been powered down for an extended period of time to
ensure systems are still fully operational, allowing Intelligent Power
Management to help reduce drive failures and increase drive life expectancy.

AutoMAID pioneered in 2001. But Adaptec's RAID controllers have a much
broader market reach - so will save more energy.

SSD Market Analysts Directory
Editor:- September 3,
2008 -
storagesearch.com today published a new directory - "SSD market
analysts and SSD market research".
It lists analysts and
market research companies which sell high quality reports or marketing
services related to the SSD market.
"As the number of SSD focused
analyst companies starts moving into double digits - defragmenting these
strategic data resources and more clearly signposting what they have to
offer, will become a necessary part of the information services that we deliver
to our readers" - said editor, Zsolt Kerekes.
"Many analysts
I talk to have insights which could help vendors design better products or get
them to market more effectively, but they have difficulty getting the
visibility they need when competing for attention in the
storage news reader
space. Storagesearch.com is the right platform - because it's also read by most
SSD vendors themselves. By moving this specialized content off the main
SSD news pages - we'll
be able to give it more depth." ...read the article
