LeWiz is the world's leading supplier of hardware-based TCP
Offload Engine (TOE) solutions that enable the highest performance, and lowest
power consumption in networked systems based on chip performance not on hype.
The LeWiz chips are designed to optimize efficiency and data delivery in
servers, network-attached storage, iSCSI storage devices, and RDMA devices.

- editor's comments:- July 2010 - in the early days of the
iSCSI market (summer of 2002)
there was a rush of companies towards what they hoped would one day be a big
market for TOEs - in the hope that this would follow the same kind of business
model as graphics accelerators had done in the 1990s.
The iSCSI
accelerator goldrush didn't happen for various reasons - initially the slow
uptake of iSCSI, and then the realization that with multi-core CPUs the job
could be done adequately using just software.
Another complicating
factor - more recently - has been the trend to put SSDs into NAS systems. SSDs
enable faster IOPS at the storage end - but if the server also has a directly
attached SSD then it's questionable whether a hardware TCP accelerator has any
role at all.
I couldn't find any mention of SSDs on LeWiz's site when
I looked. That may be a sign of a seriously big gap in their view of future
market trends.

SSD Pricing -
where does all the money go? |
SSDs are among the most
expensive computer hardware products you will ever buy.
Understanding
the factors which determine SSD costs is often a confusing and irritating
process... |

...not made any easier when
market prices for identical capacity SSDs can vary more than 100x to 1!
