Imation - recent milestones in
SSD history
and storage
history
In March 2008 -
Imation announced it
was entering the SSD market
with products oemed from Mtron.
Their SSD product line (in Feb 2009) is essentially identical to
Mtron's.
In
April 2008 - the company published a white paper called -
Flash
SSD Data Reliability and Lifetime (pdf). Starting from a description of
floating gates and going all the way up to the architecture of a
flash SSD this
paper written by Alan R. Olson & Denis J. Langlois includes good
descriptions of data failure modes, including:- erase failure, stress induced
long term leakage, disturb faults, and the potential for inadequate error
correction code coverage in MLC.

In March 2010 -
Imation today
announced
it has extended its RDX (removable hard disk) license agreement with
ProStor Systems through
2020.
Imation also announced that it has invested $5 million to help
advance ProStors technology.
Editor's coments:- RDX was unveiled in
November 2005.
Today's announcement takes the license agreement to beyond the expected lifetime
of hard disks. However, SSD
backup will also be viable in the same form factor. | |
