Symantec
- editor mentions on STORAGEsearch.com
- editor's comments:- August 2012 - Like
most other software companies Symantec was
late
entering the SSD
market. And it's not really an
SSD software company -
but rather, instead, a storage software company which can do a few limited
things with legacy
architecture SSDs.
The 1st time I noticed their SSD related
activities was in December 2009 - when Symantec announced an upgrade
to its Storage Foundation management software which enables it to
automatically
discover SSDs from leading vendors and optimize data placement on SSD
devices transparently.
I said at the time - "This is best viewed as a tool within the
context of a complex and expensive
data
migration service - rather than an
auto-tuning SSD
acceleration tool. You'll still need the SSD Hot Spot Engineer to tell you
where to migrate those files to."
In
2011 -
Symantec was part of a joint venture with Huawei called
Huawei Symantec - which
provided systems in the
high availability
SSD market.
Then, more recently - in August 2012 -
Symantec was said to be supplying
Violin Memory with
replication and related modules for use with Violin's SSD racks.
