who's who
in SSD? - Avago Technologies
by Zsolt Kerekes,
editor - StorageSearch.com - April 2015
When I wrote my
classic article -
hostage to the
fortunes of SSD (July 2013) I didn't have Avago Technologies in
mind - because at that time I had never heard of Avago - due to the fact that
it didn't have any presence whatsoever in the enterprise storage market. But the
strategic importance of the enterprise SSD market affected all kinds of
businesses in the electronics market - not just the leading characters
mentioned in that article.
In
December 2013
Avago gate crashed the SSD
market in a big way and by the first half of
2015 Avago had become
one of the most significant suppliers of
storage glue chips aimed at
the enterprise SSD market due to a series of strategic
acquisitions
which you can see more about below.
In retrospect one of the shrewd
moves which Avago made early in that series of acquisitions was to recognize
that it would deter future systems customers if it also competed with them.
Calculating the short term risks and benefits of that led to Avago selling off
the SSD business part of LSI to
Seagate almost as soon
as it had acquired the business - while retaining the interface chip part of
that business.
Today Avago is a leading supplier of interface chips for
3 primary connection types used in enterprise SSDs.

In this article I propose a new shorthand terminology which can usefully
describe any enterprise server in an SSD architecture - from an SSD software
latency envelope point of view - by a single rating number - from 0 to 7. |

Avago agrees to acquire
Broadcom |
Editor:- May 28, 2015 - Avago today
announced it
will acquire Broadcom
for approximately $37 billion.
Editor's comments:- both
companies are peripheral to
the SSD ecosystem (no pun intended) insofar as they supply communications and
interface chips which connect SSDs and SSD boxes rather than having anything too
much to do with memory related controllers.
