That can benefit VARs too.
MINNEAPOLIS, October 9, 2001 - CNT® today announced completion of testing peer-to-peer network interoperability with IBM's TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS) solutions. The tests validate CNT's ability to link VTS systems together over unlimited distances for data mirroring, disaster recovery, and business continuity applications, and reflect IBM and CNT's history of working together to address data access across the enterprise and continued data availability and redundancy. The Peer-to-Peer VTS allows users to link two VTS units into a single, interconnected system, maintaining two up-to-date copies of data. CNT's UltraNet® Storage Directors, high-speed switching platforms that allow companies to move and share data among diverse servers and storage systems, were installed at two remote VTS sites.
"For years, CNT and IBM have worked together to bring unlimited-distance high-performance storage networking to the enterprise," said Mark Knittel, group vice president of worldwide product operations, CNT. "Increasingly, customers are deploying remote connectivity storage networks in order to increase the disaster resilience of their information systems, and ensure non-stop, continuous access to information. Enabling Peer-to-Peer VTS over any distance adds a powerful new capability to high-availability tape storage that's both efficient and cost-effective."
"Peer-to-Peer VTS has been extremely successful for our customers at ESCON distances," said Brenda Zawatski, vice president of IBM's removable media storage solutions business. "With CNT's ability to extend ESCON over unlimited distances, our customers will have even more opportunity to improve the efficiency and resilience of their tape processes."
Through the tests, CNT and IBM were able to demonstrate that this highly redundant tape solution creates a bi-directional mirroring environment where two production data centers can be backed up to each other on a real-time basis. The solution can help increase efficiency by removing the mirroring process from the application server and freeing it up for normal application processing. The solution also help decrease the number of required tape drives, improves data access performance, and reduces use of tape cartridges. ...CNT profile, ...IBM profile

Editor's comments:- IT managers have long been used to the concept of using specially trained people to manage their Cisco routers, or do the systems administration on their Unix servers. But the network storage market hasn't had time to digest the new standards and train enough people to manage their own storage. So we're going to see services emerge as a fast growing segment in the storage market.
