ARMONK, NY- May 9, 2006 - IBM today announced its first front to back-end 4Gbps SAN storage system. The IBM System Storage DS4700 Express series includes 16 disk drive bays inside the controller and up to 8 host ports, reducing the need for a switch to be incorporated into the network. It can be expanded upto 112 disk drives (which can include recently available 15,000 RPM 4Gbps units. The Fibre Channel interfaces are designed to auto negotiate down to 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps for backward compatibility. SANTA CLARA, Calif. - May 9, 2006 - Hynix, Intel, Micron and Sony are among the founding companies that today announced the formation of the Open NAND Flash Interface working group. ONFI aims to simplify integration of NAND flash memory into consumer electronics devices and computing platforms. The new interface will enable NAND devices to self-describe their capabilities to the host, including memory layout, timing support and enhanced features. The specification will also standardize the command set for NAND, put infrastructure in place for future evolution of NAND capabilities, and provide flexibility for supplier-specific optimizations. Additionally, the specification will define common pin-outs in order to avoid board layout changes when using a new NAND device. Animal marketing metaphors are popular in service industries, but you'd be surprised how many companies have used animals in their marketing of data storage products and services.

The storage market was worth over $150 billion in 2005, and as it gets bigger - more companies will turn to animal brands to help differentiate their otherwise bland products and lend them artificial (or deserving) characters and virtues.
