Mass - July 14, 2004 - SANBlaze Technology, Inc. today introduced the
VirtuaLUN, a Fibre Channel Target Emulation System. The SANBlaze VirtuaLUN
system delivers an extremely cost effective approach to Fibre Channel device
development and testing. The VirtuaLUN emulates Fibre Channel disk drives for
read/write performance testing environments, with no initiator side software
changes required. The VirtuaLUN system reduces the need to deploy large farms of
physical "scratch" disks, providing high performance, non-volatile
disk media at a fraction of the cost of physical disks.
The VirtuaLUN is the ideal tool for Fibre Channel HBA, switch and infrastructure development and testing in a real world, wire speed environment. It is a unique product for any environment that requires varying amounts of fibre channel drives for testing, QA or proof of concept, eliminating the cost and complexity of deploying disk systems. The ability to rapidly change disk counts and configurations as well as simulate a wide range of target conditions provides immediate ROI in the form of saved time and money. The VirtuaLUN is available with two, four or six Fibre Channel Ports running at 1 or 2 Gbps. Each port can be configured to present up to 480 virtual "disks" or LUNs to devices under test, providing a huge cost savings over building the same capability using real disk drives. A fully configured VirtuaLUN can emulate in excess of 2800 LUNs. The system occupies a 1U rack space, providing test labs with a highly optimized test environment in a compact footprint. An integrated, easy to use web based interface allows configuration, re-configuration, error injection and monitoring from any remote system. The VirtuaLUN is available immediately. ...SANBlaze profile, Fibre-channel adapters, test tools Berkeley, CA - July 14, 2004 - Freecom Technologies has begun marketing the newest member to its Classic line of Optical Drive Products and hard-drive storage devices, an external DVD+/-RW drive that supports DVD+R double-layer recording. NovaNET 9 supports Oracle 8i and 9i Databases on Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 and SuSe Linux Enterprise Server 8. NovaNET 9 provides users of Oracle databases a cost effective, high performance solution for complete 24x7 data protection with both tape and disk-based backup. According to a recent report by the Enterprise Strategy Group backup and restore performance are the top 2 data protection concerns of IT managers. In this report, customers surveyed by ESG say that over the next 24 months, 59% of these customers will use some form of disk-based backups, 54% say that data will be backed up to disk at some point and up to 24% of data will backed up to disk exclusively. The drivers of this disk based backup trend are increased performance requirements, ease of restore and government regulations. NovaNET 9 users can leverage the latest in low cost, high performance disk-based backup solutions from leading server and RAID vendors such as DELL, IBM, HP, EMC and NetApp. The combination of NovaNET 9's Oracle Database support and our VirtualTape solution lets small businesses reduce backup time by over 50% and improve restore time by 90% over conventional tape only backup solutions. ...NovaStor profile, Backup Software, Disk to disk backup MILPITAS, Calif. and SAN JOSE, Calif.- July 13, 2004 - Adaptec, Inc. and Snap Appliance, Inc. announced today the signing of a definitive agreement for the acquisition of Snap Appliance. Adaptec's purchase price, including future cash and stock compensation, is expected to be approximately $100 million. This amount represents approximately $91 million of cash and $9 million of assumed stock options. Adaptec expects the transaction to generate more than $40 million in new revenue over the next four quarters and the acquisition is expected to be accretive to Adaptec by the end of this calendar year. "Together, Adaptec and Snap Appliance have strong synergies that we plan to capitalize on to create a unique leader in the storage industry - one that can deliver solutions for businesses of almost any size and requirements, almost any existing infrastructure, anywhere in the network, all managed by a common software management platform and enhanced by value-added software applications for a variety of key business needs," said Robert N. Stephens, president and CEO of Adaptec. This transaction further demonstrates Adaptec's aggressive expansion in the external storage market and its ongoing commitment to deliver cost-effective, scalable and easy-to-use direct-attached storage, NAS, Fibre Channel and IP-based SAN solutions from the workgroup to the data center. ...Adaptec profile, ...Snap Appliance profile, Acquired companies, NAS BELLEVUE, WA - July 13, 2004 - TeraCloud Corporation today announced the availability of a free IO profiling utility (io_profile). io_profile measures and monitors the performance characteristics of a given IO stack. As the sponsor of this free open-source tool, TeraCloud continues its commitment to increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of storage environments. Authored by Dr. Bill Pierce, Director of Software Architecture at TeraCloud and an expert in storage-area networks, the portable command-line utility actively measures the I/O stack in Windows and UNIX environments from an applications perspective. io_profile measures the performance of a large number of open-seek-read/write-close cycles at random locations in a set of randomly selected files. io_profile enables IT professionals to conduct comparative analysis and tune IO channels for I/O size characteristics. By measuring and tuning performance differences, informed decisions guide the optimization of storage solutions. In laboratory tests designed to characterize and tune I/O channels, TeraCloud achieved performance gains of 25% on Microsoft Windows XP and more than 15% on UNIX platforms. Just as important, time was saved identifying storage optimizations that had little effect on performance. Such results show the benefits of measuring and tuning I/O storage options and leveraging SRM solutions such as those developed by TeraCloud. ...TeraCloud profile, test tools San Jose, CA - July 13, 2004 - The 2005 Network Storage Conference will be held March 7, 8 and 9, 2005 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Milpitas California.
