Taco was looking for a disk-based backup solution to reduce its weekly backup window despite rapidly growing primary data. The company was performing full backups from its main SAN each weekend over a period of 46 hours. With the ExaGrid system in place the company's backup window was reduced by 30 hours down to 16 hours. Taco is also enjoying faster and more convenient restores. "In the past, if we had something we needed to restore that was more than 15 days old, it had to be restored from tape and it was an absolute nightmare" said Dennis Rachiele, Taco's senior network administrator. Because ExaGrid works with popular backup applications, Taco has preserved its investment in its existing Symantec Backup Exec application. "ExaGrid really is plug-and-play," Rachiele said. ...ExaGrid profile, Disk to disk backup DATAllegro Supplies 120T Data Warehouse Fairfax, VA - February 12, 2007 TEOCO today announced that it has acquired a data warehouse appliance from DATAllegro. Although we've discussed how to solve this gap many times before in the context of SSDs - DATAllegro says their architecture delivers fast performance without using tuning. Seagate Ships Mysteriously Priced SAS Drives SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif - February 12, 2007 - Seagate Technology today announced it has begun shipping its Savvio 10K.2 hard drives in volume to the distribution channel worldwide. The 2.5-inch drive has a Serial Attached SCSI interface, 10K RPM spin speed and up to 146GB capacity. ...Seagate profile, SAS SSDs Editor's comments:- Some of the text in thie press release is so badly written it deserves more scrutiny. "...Savvio 10K.2 pricing is 150% less than the first generation Savvio when it was originally introduced." Let's examine that in more detail shall we? If the price was 100% less than the original price - that would mean a price of zero. So if the price is 150% less does that mean Seagate pays you to take the disk off their hands? The remaining company (previously called its oem division) will be called STEC - and will focus on the highly profitable flash SSD market. It's been obvious to me for the last few years that SimpleTech's two main businesses - which at one time had some commonality in technology - had very little in common in terms of prospects, customers and markets. STEC will be much better positioned to grasp the huge opportunities in the SSD market.
