Editor's comments:-
SmartDisk said it will be changing its name to SMDK as a result of this transaction.

Sometimes a change in business means you have to change from what seemed like a good name that's easy to remember to a new one that even your employees will quickly forget. There are many examples in our renamed storage companies directory.

Squeak! - SSD Myths and Legends - "write endurance"
Does the fatal gene of "write endurance" built into flash solid state disks prevent their deployment in intensive server acceleration applications - such as RAID systems?
It was certainly true as little as a few years ago.

What's the risk with today's devices?

This article looks at the current generation of products and calculates how much (or how little) you should be worried.
read the article - SSD Myths and Legends
RAM based SSDs have been used alongside RAID for years - but flash SSDs are physically smaller and have bigger capacity (160G in 2.5") and are lower cost than RAM-SSDs and could actually be configured in standard RAID boxes. F-SSDs aren't as fast as RAM based products but a single flash SSD can deliver 20,000 IOPs - which when scaled up in an array - starts to look interesting. ...read the article, storage reliability solid state disks

Editor:- July 2, 2007 - STORAGEsearch.com has updated its monthly list of the top subjects viewed by storage searchers in June. Overall site readership was 20% higher than the year ago period. The top 5 subjects were:-

(1) - Disk to disk backup has been #1 for the past 10 months in a row.
(2) - Solid state disks (no change)
(3) - Hard drives (no change)
(4) - 2.5 inch SSDs - new to top 20 (fastest climber)
(5) - RAM based SSDs - new to top 20

NAS has dropped out of the top 5 subjects viewed by our readers for the first time in 6 years. It didn't drop far - it's still perched on a high shelf at #6 - but I believe the drop in 2 places is significant.

What does it signify?

Well I've been looking at this type of reader popularity data online for 11 years. When you see a seismic shift up or down in something which has stood rocklike in the same place for years - there's an eruption coming. And you have to look at the color of the steam coming up out of the ground rather than worry too much about what's being nudged aside.

Just as NAS itself displaced RAID and SAN (which were hot topics back in 2000) and SATA was the top subject in 2002 the bulging of SSD related subjects in the top 5 today is a clear signal to the early majority (that's the bulge which comes after the early adopters) that SSDs are going to be a big market in the years ahead. Somewhere in the region of $5-10 billion per annum depending which market model is more accurate.

The long term prospects for NAS remain good. But it has to make way for a new runaway steam engine that's going to grab more attention for a while.

Having 2 new directories shoot straight into the top 5 shows that readers appreciate having having finer tuning controls for the fast growing SSD market. We're going to satisfy that demand with more focused SSD listings and articles straight after the Holiday."
