Nibble:- iSCSI now a market reality

A
s editor of a publication like STORAGEsearch I sometimes get a distorted rosy view of what's happening in the real market with new and emerging technologies.

When a new technology is announced, it first appears as an item in our news page. Then when it starts appearing in news stories by several companies, I create a special index page for it, and wait and see what happens. My wake up call is when the subject climbs in popularity of the pages visited by our readers from obscurity (visited by market researchers, product developers and early adopters) to high visibility as one of the top 10 subjects.

According to our web log files iSCSI got its own unique index page as long ago as March 2001. 12 months later, it had already become the 4th most popular subject on STORAGEsearch. But I was surprised that we weren't being inundated with advertisers for this type of product. Research by one of my colleagues - who contacted every iSCSI vendor in November 2002 - showed that most of the products that vendors were talking about in their press releases and articles, particularly iSCSI accelerators, weren't actually shipping in any quantity - or at all. And I concluded and wrote that iSCSI was the vaporware product of the year 2002.

The summer of 2003 has witnessed a couple of important milestones which have changed all that.

iSCSI is now supported by Microsoft's operating systems. So you don't need to install the drivers yourself for every box down the food chain in your network.

Also Network Appliance and EMC announced this summer that they are shipping iSCSI storage systems. Although they weren't the first manufacturers to do so, by a long way, this now means that iSCSI has left the world of the intrepid early adopters and entered the mainstream.

The wave of interest from readers we're now seeing on STORAGEsearch is no longer dominated by experimenters who will look at any new technology to see if it is relevant to their needs. It's the advance wave of the new multi gigabit IP networked storage market.

IRVINE, CA - October 7, 2003 - NewTech Infosystems, Inc. (NTI) announced today that it is shipping the new version of its image-level backup and recovery solution called DriveBackup!

In addition to providing a fast, easy means of protecting the operating systems, applications and files on stand-alone and mobile computers, the software can also be used as a cloning utility. New to this version is the ability to restore selected files from a disk image using NTI's all new Image Explorer. NTI DriveBackup!'s advanced, step-by-step wizard takes a complete snapshot of designated partitions of the hard drive and backs the information up to a write-once or rewritable CD, DVD or other storage media. By creating a complete image of the data stored on the hard drive, partial or complete recovery is a simple process. For complete volume recovery, the bootable emergency recovery disc automatically restores the system. Available for immediate delivery, NTI DriveBackup! has a suggested retail price of US$49.99. DriveBackup! provides complete support for Windows 98, ME, 2000, NT and XP.

"IT specialists understand how important it is to protect mission-critical data and how difficult it is to rebuild the operating system, applications, settings and work-in-progress," said Bill Yao, President and CEO of NewTech Infosystems. "Whether the cause is virus corruption, a hard drive crash or because the computer was stolen, it can take hours or even days to recover all of the data ... and sometimes it can never be recovered. DriveBackup! was designed to make it fast, easy and economical for even novice users to protect their system from loss or corruption. When disaster does strike, users have fast, bare metal restore capabilities, which means you can automatically restore your entire system simply by loading the bootable recovery disc." ...NTI profile

ROSEVILLE, CA - October 7, 2003 - U.S. Data Trust Corporation today announced expanded protection for Microsoft SQL Servers. Companies using the popular Microsoft SQL database application can now have up-to-the-minute protection of their data 24 hours a day. The DataTrust Protect Online Backup and Recovery Service continuously backs up SQL databases using a secure Internet connection, ensuring a company's most recent data is always protected and available. In the event a live database is damaged or a system failure brings down the SQL server, DataTrust Protect can restore the most current data or a historical copy from the online archive, resulting in virtually no data loss from the incident.

"Small to mid-sized businesses have come to rely on their SQL database applications to drive critical company operations. Yet, like most of their critical business information, SQL databases are not being adequately protected by existing backup and recovery practices." said Paul Hrabal, President of U.S. Data Trust. "With DataTrust Protect's expanded protection for SQL servers, companies can now ensure that their databases can be recovered up to the point of failure instead of having to revert to a backup from last night, or worse, from several days ago."

Keith Carlson, systems administrator for KnowledgeDNA of Santa Barbara, CA, saw the value of DataTrust Protect when he had to restore his SQL database. "My SQL database was corrupted during an upgrade. We restored the database with DataTrust Protect Online Backup Service and it worked like a champ. I picked a date and time [to restore from the archive], and bingo, everything was back."

DataTrust Protect Online Backup Service is sold as a managed service with plans starting as low as $199 per month. Installation is usually completed in less than 20 minutes using a simply "point and click" web interface. Once configured, DataTrust Protect runs automatically in the background with the U.S. Data Trust Service Operations Center monitoring backup and restore operation 24 hours a day. A 30-Day Risk-Free Trial is available on the U.S. Data Trust web site. ...U.S. Data Trust profile

Proven to withstand shocks of up to 1,200 G's without damage to stored data, the high-capacity Mobile DataVault 3DX is available in 80GB, 120GB, 180GB, and 250GB capacities. Olixir's portable Mobile DataVault 3DX protects a high capacity of data like no other device on the market today. It's the simplest and easiest system to use to protect, secure, capture, and archive data every day."

October 6, 2003 - Rambus Inc. today announced that the United States Supreme Court has issued a ruling denying Infineon Technologies' petition for a writ of certiorari in the litigation between Infineon and Rambus. This ruling, announced by the Supreme Court today, means that Infineon has exhausted all possible avenues of appeal from the January 29, 2003 ruling of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. That Federal Circuit ruling favored Rambus. It confirmed the breadth of Rambus's patent claims as asserted against Infineon. It also rejected Infineon's fraud counterclaims, concluding that Rambus had not been shown to have violated the rules of an industry standard setting organization called JEDEC and that those rules showed a "staggering lack of defining details." The Federal Circuit also concluded that Rambus did not have applications or patents that read on any JEDEC standard during the relevant time. ...Infineon Technologies profile, ...Rambus profile
